Major General Mohammed Shuwa: The tragic end of a disciplined and courageous military officer
Major General Mohammed Shuwa OFR, was born on 1 September 1939 in Masharte, Borno State. He is regarded among the most distinguished officers in the history of the Nigerian Army.
He was the first General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army’s 1st Division and played a defining role during the Nigerian Civil War.
His life, marked by discipline, courage, and public service, came to a tragic end on 2 November 2012 when he was assassinated in Maiduguri by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
Shuwa’s early years were shaped by a strong educational foundation. He began his education at Kala Elementary School between 1946 and 1947, then moved to Bama Central Elementary School from 1948 to 1950.
He continued at Bornu Middle School from 1950 to 1952 before gaining admission into Barewa College, Zaria, where he studied from 1952 to 1957.

At Barewa College, he shared classrooms with several future national figures, including Murtala Muhammed, who would later become Nigeria’s Head of State.
The institution was renowned for producing leaders who would shape Nigeria’s political and military trajectory.
On 19 September 1958, Shuwa enlisted in the Nigerian Army alongside contemporaries such as Murtala Muhammed, Illiya Bisalla, and Ibrahim Haruna. He began his officer training at the Regular Officers Special Training School in Teshie, Ghana, and later proceeded to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the United Kingdom.
In July 1961, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, joining the growing corps of Nigerian officers who would soon inherit command of the nation’s armed forces after independence.
During the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, Shuwa commanded the 1st Division of the Nigerian Army. His leadership during the conflict was firm and strategic.

He notably opposed the planned river assault on Onitsha championed by Murtala Muhammed, an operation that proved costly and controversial.
Historical accounts suggest that their disagreement became so intense that it nearly resulted in a physical confrontation, reflecting the high tensions and divergent tactical views within the military command at the time.
Shuwa also played a significant role in one of the war’s most symbolic moments. He informed General Yakubu Gowon, then Head of State, about the death of Major Kaduna Nzeogwu in Nsukka. Nzeogwu, a central figure in the January 1966 coup, had aligned with Biafran forces during the war.
Despite the circumstances, Gowon ordered that Nzeogwu’s body be transported to Kaduna and accorded full military honours.
The gesture underscored the complexity of loyalties and the enduring bonds among officers who had once served together.

Following the war, Shuwa continued to serve Nigeria in both military and civil capacities. From 1975 to 1979, he held the position of Federal Commissioner for Trade and Works, contributing to national development during a critical post war reconstruction period.
He retired from the Nigerian Army on 1 October 1979, the day the military formally handed over power to the civilian administration of President Shehu Shagari.
In retirement, Shuwa remained a respected elder statesman, particularly in northern Nigeria.
His assassination on 2 November 2012 in Maiduguri shocked the nation and symbolised the painful realities of insurgency in the region he once served with distinction.
His death marked the passing of one of Nigeria’s most respected soldiers, a man whose career spanned the formative and turbulent decades of the nation’s history.
