Suspected terrorists send threat letter, demand ₦100 million levy

Residents of Utono community in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State are gripped by fear following a threat letter allegedly written by suspected terrorists demanding a payment of ₦100 million.

The letter, reportedly addressed to the district head of the community, warned residents to prepare the sum alongside livestock, which the group described as a levy. The authors of the message allegedly claimed that failure to comply would result in an attack on the community.

According to local sources, the letter instructed that the money be assembled at the palace of the district head, while cattle owners were asked to present their livestock for assessment. The group also reportedly warned residents against fleeing the town, stating that security forces would not be able to prevent the planned assault.

The development has sparked panic across Utono and neighbouring settlements, with some families said to be relocating to safer areas amid fears of a possible invasion. Community members expressed concern that similar threats in other parts of the North-West have previously preceded violent attacks.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from Kebbi State authorities or security agencies regarding the authenticity of the letter or measures being taken to address the threat.

Security operatives are, however, expected to intensify surveillance in the area as residents await further updates.
