Fire guts Abuja furniture market as swift response saves ₦1.8bn worth of property

A fire outbreak has razed parts of a popular furniture market in Abuja, destroying several shops and goods, while property estimated at ₦1.8 billion was saved through the swift intervention of firefighters.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, triggered panic among traders as flames spread rapidly across wooden structures and stored materials within the market.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service confirmed that multiple fire trucks were deployed to the scene, preventing the inferno from engulfing the entire market.

According to the service, the prompt response and coordinated firefighting efforts helped contain the blaze and protect surrounding shops and properties valued at about ₦1.8 billion.

“No life was lost in the incident, and the fire was successfully brought under control before it could spread further,” a fire service official said.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, authorities said investigations are ongoing to ascertain its origin and assess the extent of damage.

Affected traders have appealed for government assistance, lamenting the losses suffered in the blaze.

The incident has renewed calls for improved fire safety measures in markets across the Federal Capital Territory, especially in areas with flammable materials and dense shop layouts.
