KACRAN urges Nigerian gov’t, ASUU to end strike, save education system
Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has appealed to Nigerian government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach a befiting agreement and end the ongoing strike so students can go back to school.
In a statement signed by the national president of KACRAN, Honourable Khalil Mohd Bello, the strike that has been lingering since February, 2022 has become a major source of worry to the union.
Honourable Bello said, “We strongly believe that education is the bedrock for nation building and our universities are the pinnacle of learning where people will advance their studies for country’s economic development.
“If this strike continues, the nation’s educational system will deteriorate seriously or even collapsed completely, because from most indication qualified lecturers that government invested great resources to train may get frustrated and relinquish their services and relocate to more advanced and developed countries inorder to get higher renumeration.
“The country is already losing with the movement of thousands of qualified medical doctors/health professionals to England and other countries in search of greener pastures at this sensitive times when the country is battling the shortage of medical personnel.
“A clear example of what we are talking about is the publication in some national dailies that said one doctor is expected to look after 5000 people.
“This strike will weaken our federal and states universities and give more strength to their private counterparts and seeing that the government is still approving the creation of more private universities and higher institutions at the time when most of our public institutions are lacking professional lecturers to the extent that they heavily rely on visiting lecturers for their accreditation by NUC and other survival.
“ASUU strike is a loss to the federal government, university lecturers, it brings more harm to the students, parents and the entire nation since there is a tendency that it will drastically reduce the value of Nigerian university certificates in the world labour market.
“And due to frustration and anger, some of these students will indulge in criminal activities, Nigeria can’t afford that in this period when government is doing its best to end criminality and insecurity bedeviling the country.
“There is also going to be stiff competition during admission in the universities since there will be multiple new students who have passed UTME exams and old ones that have delayed in the same session.
The union further observed that the prolonged strike can cause shortage in the deployment of corps members to places of primary assignments.
“Corps member may face rejections at their places of primary assignments because of upsurge in their number when the strike ends.
“The aforementioned are the ugly consequences associated with the ongoing ASUU, which is why KACRAN passionately appeals to ASUU and federal government to urgently return to ther bargaining table and make some sacrifices/adjustment on their demands so as to bring an end to the ongoing strike,” the national president stated.
The statement further appreciates individuals, groups that have been working tirelessly to bring an end to the strike since it started.
“KACRAN appreciates persons like Mr Ahmed Isa, the Ordinary President, who went to the extent of creating a foundation to raise fund to pay the lecturers demands and many numerous people or groups for their commendable efforts toward ending the strike.
