Tinubu mourns Niger tanker explosion victims, pledges support for survivors

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the tragic fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed over 80 lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, President Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the deceased, the injured, and the government and people of Niger State. He described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that underscores the need for heightened safety awareness.

The devastating explosion occurred on Saturday when a fuel tanker overturned. Many of the victims were reportedly scooping Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the tanker when it exploded, resulting in widespread casualties.

Presidential Action Plan
President Tinubu has ordered the provision of comprehensive medical care for the injured and directed security and road safety agencies to enforce stricter safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.

Additionally, he has mandated the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide public awareness campaign. The campaign will educate citizens on the dangers of approaching accident sites involving fuel-laden vehicles and the environmental risks associated with fuel spills.

The President emphasized the need for citizens to exercise caution during emergencies, especially in scenarios involving highly combustible materials.

The explosion has prompted a wave of mourning across the country, with several leaders and agencies expressing their condolences and urging adherence to road safety protocols.
