Lakurawa attack leaves six dead in Sokoto as military dismantles terrorist camps

Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed six civilians during a violent raid on rural communities in Sokoto State, triggering a decisive military operation that led to the destruction of multiple terror camps linked to the group.

The attack was reported to have occurred in villages around Isa and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas, where the gunmen invaded homes in the early hours, shooting indiscriminately and setting food stores ablaze.

Local sources said the victims included farmers and traders who were unable to escape the assault.
Among those killed was Abdulrahman Bello, while the names of the remaining five victims were still being compiled by community leaders as of the time of reporting.

Following the incident, troops under Operation Hadarin Daji, supported by intelligence assets, launched sustained ground and aerial offensives against Lakurawa enclaves hidden within forested border routes linking Sokoto to neighbouring states.

Military sources confirmed that several terrorists were neutralised, with their camps, weapons caches, motorcycles and communication equipment destroyed.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadarin Daji, Major General Godwin Mutkut, with field coordination by sector commanders deployed in eastern Sokoto.

Reacting to the killings, Sokoto State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd.), described the attack as “barbaric” and assured residents that security agencies were intensifying patrols and intelligence-led operations to flush out remaining elements of the group.

Residents of the affected communities have called on the federal government to sustain military pressure on Lakurawa fighters, noting that repeated attacks have disrupted farming activities and forced some families to flee.

The Nigerian Army urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements, reiterating its resolve to restore peace and stability across Sokoto and other troubled parts of the North-West.
