Nigeria congratulates Iran on Islamic revolution anniversary, reaffirms commitment to stronger bilateral ties

The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, underscoring the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries and pledging enhanced cooperation across multiple sectors.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described the anniversary as a historic milestone in Iran’s modern history, reflecting Tehran’s enduring commitment to national sovereignty, stability and development. The statement said Nigeria recognises the profound significance of this occasion for the Iranian people and joins in wishing them continued progress and prosperity.

“Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation,” the ministry said, noting that both nations have enjoyed diplomatic relations for more than five decades based on mutual respect and shared interests.

Expanded Diplomatic and Economic Engagement

Officials highlighted an ongoing willingness to expand collaboration bilaterally and multilaterally, particularly in political, economic, cultural and technical spheres. The Nigerian government said expanding ties with Iran reflects its broader commitment to peaceful cooperation and meaningful international partnerships.

Earlier this week, Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, also reaffirmed Tehran’s interest in deepening bilateral cooperation, pointing to shared goals in economic resilience and technological progress.

Additionally, diplomatic sources say both countries are looking to strengthen South–South cooperation — a framework that supports collaborative development among countries of the Global South — as part of their broader foreign policy engagement.

The anniversary comes amid broader regional and international dynamics, including ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. Despite these pressures, Nigeria has maintained its diplomatic stance, emphasising the importance of respect for sovereignty and peaceful coexistence in international relations.

As celebrations unfold in Tehran and diplomatic messages are exchanged globally, Abuja’s message signals Nigeria’s intent to deepen strategic ties with Tehran, potentially opening new avenues for trade, investment and technical cooperation in the years ahead.
