Apprentice in custody after allegedly killing boss with pestle in Onitsha

Tension gripped parts of Onitsha on Sunday after a young apprentice, popularly referred to as a nwa-boi, allegedly killed his employer during a heated confrontation.

Residents said the shocking incident occurred at the victim’s business premises, where the apprentice had been living and learning the trade under his guardian. What began as a disagreement reportedly escalated into violence, with the suspect said to have grabbed a pestle and struck his boss.

Eyewitnesses claimed the trader collapsed after the blow, triggering panic among neighbours and other shop owners who rushed to the scene. Attempts were made to save him, but he was later confirmed dead, leaving the commercial community stunned.

The relationship between an employer and apprentice is widely regarded as sacred in Igbo business culture, often built on trust, loyalty and long-term mentorship. Sunday’s incident has therefore sent waves of grief and disbelief through traders, many of whom struggled to understand how such a bond could end in bloodshed.

“It is heartbreaking,” a trader in the area said. “You train someone like your own child, then something like this happens.”

Security operatives were quickly alerted and moved in to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The suspect was reportedly apprehended and taken into custody for questioning. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the fatal attack.

Community leaders have appealed for calm, warning against reprisals while urging young people to avoid violence no matter the provocation.
