Kano State Government shuts entertainment centres for Ramadan
The Kano State Government has directed the immediate closure of all entertainment centres across the state as Muslims prepare for the Ramadan fasting period.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Censorship Board, Abdullahi Sulaiman, the order affects entertainment spots commonly referred to as gala houses, as well as Disc Jockey (DJ) operators under the board’s supervision.
The directive takes effect from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and will remain in force until the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Sulaiman explained that the decision was taken to foster a calm and morally appropriate atmosphere, allowing Muslim faithful to observe the fasting period without distractions.

He noted that all entertainment activities regulated by the board would remain suspended throughout Ramadan. A date for reopening, particularly ahead of the Eid celebrations, will be announced later.
The board called on affected business owners and DJs to comply fully with the order, warning that enforcement teams would be deployed to ensure adherence. Defaulters, he said, would face appropriate sanctions.
The agency maintained that the move falls within its mandate to regulate entertainment activities and uphold moral and social order during religious seasons.
Amid mixed reactions from residents, the board clarified that the directive does not extend to event centres used for weddings, conferences, or political gatherings.

A director at the board, Usman Dankwano, stressed that only venues strictly classified as entertainment outlets—such as gala houses and similar recreational spots under the board’s jurisdiction—are impacted. He added that event centres are not regulated by the board, urging the public to disregard misconceptions surrounding the directive.
